RESUMO

The skin and adnexa can be difficult to interpret because they change dramatically with the hair cycle throughout life. However, a variety of methods are commonly available to collect skin and perform assays that can be useful for figuring out morphological and molecular changes. This overview provides information on basic approaches to evaluate skin and its molecular phenotype, with references for more detail, and interpretation of results on the skin and adnexa in the mouse. These approaches range from mouse genetic nomenclature, setting up a cutaneous phenotyping study, skin grafts, hair follicle reconstitution, wax stripping, electron microscopy, and Köbner reaction to very specific approaches such as lipid and protein analyses on a large scale.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Symmetrical lupoid onychomadesis (SLO) is a disease not infrequently seen in bearded collie dogs in Germany. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare historical and clinical data, as well as the mineral content of the hair and claws of bearded collies with SLO with that of normal control dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty-eight affected bearded collie dogs and 39 control dogs. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Owners completed an extensive questionnaire regarding upbringing, environmental conditions and diets. Claw specimens were obtained by claw trimming or gathering lost claws; hairs were obtained by plucking samples from several areas of the body; samples were converted to ash and evaluated in an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. RESULTS: Clinical signs in affected dogs eventually involved all claws on all paws. In twelve dogs recurrence of onychomadesis was observed. There was no relevant association between gender, housing, diet and health management, physical stress and the development of SLO with exception of the age at which more intense exercise began. The most commonly used treatment combination was fatty acids, pentoxifylline and tetracycline; improvement occurred in 17 animals. Calcium, sodium and phosphorus concentrations were higher in the claws of affected dogs, whereas zinc concentrations were lower. The mineral content of hair samples of the affected dogs was not significantly different than controls. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Symmetrical lupoid onychomadesis in bearded collies is clinically similar to what has been described in other breeds with regard to clinical signs and response to treatment. Early strenuous activity may increase the risk for disease occurrence in this breed.

RESUMO

This study reports the condition onychomadesis affecting multiple claws in Norwegian Gordon and English setters. Medical records of and claw biopsies from 18 Gordon and four English setters with onychomadesis of multiple claws were obtained from July 2005 to January 2007. Only dogs with symmetrical onychomadesis and no signs of concurrent disease were included. Histopathological features varied between dogs, but typically included interface dermatitis with subepidermal cleft formation, pigment incontinence, basal cell vacuolization and necrosis, spongiosis and lymphocytic exocytosis, a lymphocytic, plasmacytic subepidermal inflammation, and fibroplasia. In two dogs, histopathological signs of a superficial infection were present. The age of onset of disease varied between 2 and 7 years with a mean of 3.9 years, and was not correlated with vaccination time. Six of the affected dogs also had siblings with the disease. Due to the close relationship of the affected dogs, pedigree map analysis was not possible. Three dogs were euthanized because of the disease and two had regrowth of normal claws. Seventeen dogs had persistent onychodystrophy that typically was nonpainful during therapy which in most dogs consisted of fatty acid supplementation or prednisolone.

RESUMO

A spontaneous genodermatosis in 13 cotton-top tamarins is described as a retrospective study. The disease appeared as alopecia, pigmentary disturbances, and claw dystrophy similar but not identical to human Pachyonychia congenita. The disease in the tamarins seems to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, becoming clinically apparent around adolescence. In certain families the neonatal mortality rate was also above average, reaching 100%.
